As Hard Rock continues its expansion into the Canadian market, the Ottawa location required special attention to mechanical system performance due to the region’s harsh winter climate. The original heating design – based on a standardized template used in other locations – was not optimized for the extreme temperatures and specific environmental demands of Ottawa. This presented a key challenge: adapting the system to ensure reliable performance and occupant comfort year-round.
Solutions Provided
O’Dell partnered with Modern Niagara Mechanical to revise the original mechanical plan. The O’Dell team supported a localized redesign of the in-slab heating system to enhance its effectiveness in cold-weather conditions.
The equipment supplied included:
-
Watts in-slab radiant piping for efficient heat delivery
-
Riello boilers to provide consistent hot water generation
-
Armstrong circulation pumps for durable and reliable system flow
Our involvement focused on aligning equipment and design to suit Ottawa’s demanding climate, while also supporting Hard Rock’s vision for a functional and comfortable four-season outdoor gaming area.
Results
The custom in-slab radiant heating solution enabled Hard Rock to maintain full use of its outdoor gaming area throughout the year. The system provides quiet, energy-efficient comfort and helps extend the usability of the space regardless of weather conditions. While additional systems were used elsewhere in the building, this installation highlights O’Dell’s expertise in tailored heating solutions for specialty applications.
Conclusion
This project highlights the importance of adapting standardized mechanical designs to local conditions. O’Dell helped deliver a climate-appropriate solution for one of Canada’s most recognized hospitality brands. Our approach ensured the mechanical systems met performance expectations, minimized risk, and were built to last – no matter what the Ottawa weather brings.
