The best way to heat a perimeter space in Canada is to install radiant heat. (i.e. radiant panels, baseboard, etc.) Unfortunately, installation of radiant heat comes with a high first cost that cannot be justified in many buildings. Fortunately, addressing thermal comfort in perimeter zones is possible.
In order to ensure thermal comfort in an exterior space, the followinig rules should be followed …
- Limit discharge temperature from diffuser to maintain a 15°F ΔT with respect to ambient space condions. (i.e. limit dischage to 90°F)
- The air jet should reach 4-5 ft AFF at a terminal velocity of 150-fpm
Using these simple rules, you will meet ASHRAE Standard 55 and limit the amount of ventilation required for the space based on ASHRAE Standard 62.
