The LG MV5: New and Improved VRF

Blog
Decarbonization

Recently, O’Dell spoke with a wide range of engineers and contractors about the next generation of LG’s variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system, the MV5.  We’re really excited about the advancements in this product and the steps LG has made in terms of efficiency and reliability. Here are a few takeaways that we wanted to share about MV5:

Dual Sensing Technology

The MV5 monitors both outdoor temperature and humidity. With dual sensing, the system can react more intelligently, delivering improved space comfort. This feature also improves heating capability at low temperatures, changing the system pressure and minimizing frost accumulation on the outdoor coils. The dual sensing results in an increase in heating operation time of up to 17%.

Defrost Improvements

It’s no secret that Canadian winters can be hard on air-source heat pumps, but LG meets the challenge head on. In addition to dual sensing technology, LG has dedicated the bottom two rows of its outdoor unit coil for condensing (i.e. heat rejection). This continual heat output eliminates ice build up on the coil and unit base.

Smart Oil Management

The MV5 has both auto oil balancing and smart non-stop oil return. By monitoring the oil level in the compressors, the system can operate for extended periods and deliver constant space conditioning. Testing shows it can operate for over 200 days without needing an oil return cycle.

Fan Dynamics

Inspired by nature, LG has designed a biomimetic fan blade that imitates the unique features of humpback whales and clam shells. The result is a 10% improvement in airflow rate, a 7% reduction in noise and a 20% reduction in power consumption!

Heat Exchanger

With a 4-sided coil design, LG has increased the heat transfer area by 20%. For additional reliability, all heat exchanger coils are treated with a black fin hydrophilic corrosion resistance coating.

Large Capacity Outdoor Unit (ODU)

With all the efficiency upgrades and design improvements, LG can still pack a big punch in a small package. The 20-tonne single chassis ODU reduces space, improves efficiency and saves money.
