OBC Requirements for Compensating Kitchen Hoods

Blog

On January 1, 2012, the OBC adopted ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2010 for efficiency standards.  This was outlined in Supplementary Standard 10 – Energy Efficiency Update for Large Buildings.

In order to meet OBC energy guidelines, the engineer has (3) different paths available:

a) Exceed by not less than 25% the energy efficiency levels attained by comforming to the CCBFC, “Model National Energy Code for Buildings”
b) Exceed by not less than 5% the energy efficiency levels attained by conforming to ASHRAE 90.1
c) Achieve energy efficiency levels attained by conforming to ASHRAE 90.1

Options (a) and (b) require energy modeling to prove conformance and are rarely followed.  Option (c) is a prescriptive path and is by far the more applied path for conformance.

Within ASHRAE 90.1-2010, Paragraph 6.5.7.1.1 limits replacement air introduced into the hood cavity of kitchen exhaust hoods to no more than 10% of hood exhaust flow rate.  With this restriction, application of compensating hoods in commercial kitchens is no longer viable.
